Do all authors really need literary agents or it better to go straight to some small publishers instead?

Well, if an author wants to have a go at the big publishing houses, they don't have a prayer without an agent. If you apply to smaller houses you might get a book published...but why not get an agent? If the writing isn't good enough for an agent to take interest in it, it won't be good enough for a publisher
